Deployed Airman Uniting Americans Through Facebook American Flag App
From his deployed location, a USAF Captain who will remain unnamed was scrolling through his Facebook feed noticing the most recent turmoil with Americans regarding the confederate flag and the supreme court’s ruling on marriage. He then thought to himself, “This should really be the American flag, which unites us all.” So he went to work and made it happen.
The airman reached out to his friend Major Tony Weedn who is an Air Force pilot and also owns a software development and SEO company called GLIP. He then called up Tony and they discussed how to build a Facebook app that would change the user’s profile picture to an American flag. “I started seeing rainbows and starred “x’s” all over the web. As I sit here, watching Americans risk their lives every day so we are able to still have these debates online, in person, and in the press, I can’t help but think, “Where is Old Glory?,” he said. So the airman, while deployed in combat from the other side of the world, and the GLIP team got to work on creating the app to help Celebrate America. They partnered with 33 Productions, another software development and internet marketing company, and they went to work. He continued, “I truly believe we should be humble about our privileges, but if you are going to have pride in something, why is it not the United States of America? Why is it not the stars and stripes that resemble our great nation that allows the freedom to display these images in its absence?”
Overnight they produced the Facebook app Celebrate America and launched it today July 1st, just in time for celebrating the holiday that he will be missing with his family. “On July 4th, 2015, we will be celebrating our country’s 239th birthday! 239 years of debates, legislation, and change. Citizens of our great nation have disagreed since the beginning. In fact our founding fathers even had their disagreements on the Declaration of Independence itself! Despite our differences, we have made it this far! Let’s not forget the who, the how, and the why we enjoy these freedoms today. Show others that you remember and celebrate Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness!,” he said.
